In my experience, online business owners often search for new ways to showcase their products.

They want to reach new audiences with their amazing products and, of course, increase their sales.

Social media sites such as IG and FB have been pioneers in the e-commerce space throughout the years.

They work hand in hand as a free and paid resource for businesses of all sizes.

We all know that posting your product catalog on your profile and linking to your online store from your Instagram bio is the simplest way to start selling your product.

But many of these businesses stay on the surface of what a Facebook page and the Instagram app are capable of.

They rely on manually posting and replying to every single DM they get.

They're also not capturing their audience with other tools like email, leaving untapped potential lying around.

This is an outdated marketing tactic that has been the bread and butter of e-commerce owners using an Instagram business profile or a Facebook business page.

So, what if I told you there is so much more to social media than posting and waiting for new customers to arrive as if by magic?

Bread and butter are great; however, they are the appetizer to what could be the fancy steak dinner we all wish for.

Few people know about THE new way to sell on Instagram through direct messages.

It's been a well-kept secret for a while, but no longer.

With this five-step framework, I'll show you how I turn my clients' DMs into automated sales machines and how you can, too.

Squeezing the Potential of Your Instagram Business Account

If we haven’t met, I’m Liz, and since 2019, I’ve been running a DFY AI chatbot agency.

We are on a mission to change how online brands monetize their Instagram and Facebook channels, one conversation at a time.

I share strategies that help my clients increase revenue and engagement on Meta platforms using MY proprietary technology and done-for-you chat system.

Since 2019, I’ve sent over 50,000,000 DMs through Instagram and Facebook, optimizing sales conversational interfaces for some of the biggest names in the E-com space and creator brands.

Over these past five years working with DMs, my data has repeatedly proven that when you send someone straight to your website through links in bios or stories, out of every 100 people, 2-3 will buy.

That's a 2-3% average purchase rate.

Business owners have come to accept this as the standard, with no way to increase it past that point.

Well, what if I told you I've seen clients 10xing that rate many times?

When you keep people in the DMs engaged in personal conversations contextual to their current needs, you learn about them and build relationships, and you get these types of results.

Let's not forget the cherry on top: this is all automated and will save you and your team hundreds of hours, but we'll dive deeper into that in a minute.

You may be wondering why I specifically focus on Facebook and Instagram DMs.

I doubt I have to tell you how much time people spend scrolling through their feeds on both of these apps.

They are steadily becoming the main source of information for people looking to spend their hard-earned cash on novel and quality products.

So why would we want to be anywhere else?

The Perfect Strategy for the Best Instagram Shopping Experience

Step 1:

Take this beauty e-commerce brand.

They had an Instagram presence that wasn't being monetized, getting 1,000 views/reel, 2-3 meaningful comments, and 20 DMs/day.

They didn't know it at the time, but they already had the ingredients, and all my team and I did was combine them to cook a perfect dish they wouldn't forget.

I looked at their acquisition process to understand how people buy from them, but most importantly, why don’t they buy immediately?

What are their top 3 objections pre-purchase?

Sometimes, our clients already have this data, but most times, we have to get it ourselves.

We do this by engaging potential customers in the DMs through keywords.

This is done through Instagram stories, feed posts, and even Instagram ads.

It is crucial for us to have this information so we can better understand their buying habits.

With this, we create a chatbot that is as personalized as possible for each user.

From here, the chatbot will guide the user down one of many different paths to the ultimate goal, the checkout line.

Keep reading because we'll break this down more in-depth.

Step 2:

After I know what we're working with, I’ll build a conversational experience using a tool like Manychat.

It takes a user from “just browsing your Instagram feed” to “just bought,” all automated and crazy fast.

This 1-1 conversation will educate, answer FAQs,

design personalized recommendations and potentially down-sell or up-sell depending on the user's budget.

Step 3:

Next, we help shift the brand’s content structure to focus on building relationships with their followers.

Sure, they could just post pictures of their products on their Instagram account and ask people to click the link in BIO to shop.

But where is the connection there?

I'm telling you, this is the biggest reason why that 2% Conversion Rate stays put.

What we want is to start a meaningful conversation.

With our chatbot and content strategy in place, our clients start posting content about their products with a twist.

This can be in the form of a reel, asking people to comment QUIZ to their “skin quiz” in the DMs to find the perfect product that matches their unique needs.

They’d post this type of content on their Instagram profile two to three times a week.

Users had the opportunity to engage and get FREE value.

It could be a free video tutorial, a guide, or even a time-sensitive discount, as long as it was in the DMs.

This achieves two things:

  1. We build relationships.
  2. Meta rewards us for keeping our audience within the DMs, pushing our content to a wider audience.

Step 4:

Using my revenue software that bolts on top of Manychat, I’ll get real-time insights into a few things:

  1. When do people buy?
  2. How do they buy?
  3. What makes them buy?
  4. Where do they drop off?

This data comes from the proprietary framework I developed that allows us to get the scoop on who's shopping, who's not, and WHY?

Having this information, we optimize this system to start different types of conversations.

These conversations are based on the users' actions inside the DMs, their interests, and their past purchase history with the brand.

Every conversation is personalized to each of our user's wants and needs.

During the first four weeks, we collected data while also pushing traffic to the DMs from Instagram posts and stories.

From this data, I see that a rather large percentage of people bring up a similar question to the DMs that is holding them back from making the purchase.

For example, “I’m unsure what to choose for my skin type.”

We'll build this question into the system, and 30 minutes after the user receives an offer, if that user has not placed an order, the chatbot will come in and offer the user a recommendation quiz.

Once optimized, a pre-purchase chat system like this gets us anywhere between a 7%-39% purchase rate.

Step 5:

This is all well and good, but how can you scale it to get repeat purchases, subscriptions, or even increased AOV?

Here's the game changer: we can get the chatbot to check in immediately upon purchase or, in this example, two weeks later.

It'll see how the user is enjoying the product, potentially collect a review, and, in this case, upsell them to the brand’s subscription.

Just by asking, we got up to 22% of users to purchase the subscriptions.

Our clients give us the ingredients; we cook up the 5-star menu and deliver never-before-seen results.

The only thing left to do is to put some advertising budget behind it, drive paid traffic to these automated conversations, and watch them go to the next level.
